ITunes question.............?

I just downloaded iTunes on my computer. And, I have songs on my computer already I have them on Ares but when I press open external Windows Media player comes up.. How can I change that over to iTunes? And also, I haven't used my ipod in so long and I got a new computer can I stil put songs on my ipod or do I need a disk?
