How to turn off and on hard disk?

I know the computer can be set to turn off the hard disk through power settings and i can change it to never but just to know how do i wake it up when the hard disk is off since if i press any key there is no response, the screen is black(i had the laptop's lid closed so it was black but it did not turn on when i opened it which it was supposed to do, and it does, because i have closing the lid set to do nothing. The num lock caps lock etc dont even change light colors and when i press the power on the laptop does a forced shutdown and i think that is damaging for it So i if anyone could help me at least i might find the answer that it is that it does not work and it bugs up when the hard disk turns off.
